Eritrean Refugee Camp Crisis

“There is nothing small in the service of God” St. Francis de Sales

A few months ago, some students expressed concern about the well-being of Eritrean refugees in Libya and Ethiopia and wanted to help.   We sought the advice of experts and activists from a number of places around the world who generously gave of their time to help us determine what we could do as a school community.

Together, we decided to write our Canadian government to put pressure on the Ethiopian government to respect human rights in the Tigray region and to safeguard refugees. We are sending our letters to Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada, as well as: Melanie Joly, Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs; Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship; Harjit Sajjan, Minister of International Development; Michael Chong, Member of Parliament for  Wellington-Halton; and Lloyd Longfield, Member of Parliament for Guelph.

Our students have prepared a short video that gives a brief overview of our campaign and the reasons behind it.

If you would like to participate in our campaign, you can download and print a copy of the letter here. We suggest printing six copies of the letter, to send one to each of the 6 above-mentioned people. You can also pick up printed copies at school in the main office.

A translated copy of the parent letter into Tigrinya can be found here and a copy of the advocacy letter in Tigrinya can be found here.

You can either mail the letters yourself (no postage is required to mail letters to the government in Canada!) or drop them off in the main office of the school, and we will mail them for you.

We are proud of the compassion and leadership demonstrated by the students who have worked so hard to bring about this campaign!

“Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” (Matthew 25.40)
